WILDCOAST Thrilled About New Ocean Real Time Info App

by Paloma Aguirre

January 3, 2014, San Diego-

Today WILDCOAST joined the County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health at a press conference to unveil their new Web App.

The primary goal of this App is to notify the public of water quality conditions across the County and provide updates when water quality advisories or closures are issued or removed. The App will provide all beach users real time beach water quality information 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This will allow the public to make informed decisions about potential beach water quality health risks, which occur when water quality does not meet State health Standards.

This is of particular of importance to WILDCOAST and all of south San Diego county's beach goers and ocean users because of the potential public health threats caused by sewage contaminated ocean-water from the Tijuana River.

Once the Tijuana River begins to flow, conditions can rapidly change from one moment to the next due to weather and surface water conditions. With this new App, Tijuana River status updates will be available at the touch of a button. Furthermore critical comprehensive background data on the dynamics of the river are also available with a single click.

The current Tijuana River Status is clearly listed in a button near the top of the page as either “LOW” or “HIGH” risk. This button changes color from green (low risk) to red (high risk), depending on conditions, so that beach users can determine what the potential risks are in the South County at a glance. Clicking on this button will provide additional information on the Tijuana River Valley and associated dynamics in that region.

The App also functions as a standard website for computers, but also intuitively optimizes how it displays information for mobile devices such as tablets and smart phones to enhance the users experience on these types of mobile devices.
