The iconic surf break of San Miguel, the birth of Mexican surfing, will be included in the Bahia de Todos Santos World Surfing Reserve

WILDCOAST, World Surfing Reserves, Save The Waves Coalition, PRONATURA Noroeste and Surf Ens are excited to announce that on Saturday, June 21, Bahia de Todos Santos, in Baja California, Mexico, will be dedicated as the world’s sixth World Surfing Reserve and the first in Mexico. The Reserve extends from the surf break Stacks just south of San Miguel, to Isla Todos Santos in the west (including the famous big-wave break Killers), to Salsipuedes to the north. The Reserve includes five of Mexico’s best and most popular surf spots.

Bahia de Todos Santos becomes the sixth site to receive World Surfing Reserve status, and the second in Latin America, following the recent approval of Huanchaco, Peru. Several local organizations were involved with its application for World Surfing Reserve status, including Ensenada-based Surf Ens, Mexican NGO PRONATURA Noroeste and binational conservation organization WILDCOAST.

The area in and around Bahia de Todos Santos is known for its world-class surf, biodiversity and beauty. Mexico’s surfing history can be traced here, with San Miguel being one of the first waves to be surfed consistently by visiting Southern California surfers beginning in the late 50s. The San Miguel Surf Club was Mexico’s very first surf club.

The dedication ceremony will begin at 3 pm at San Miguel and include brief presentations by local dignitaries, professional surfers and NGO leaders, the unveiling of a bronze plaque acknowledging the World Surfing Reserve status, paddle out and music. An after party will kick off at 6 pm at Kraken Urban Market in nearby El Sauzal and will feature local beer, wine, food and music.
