A record number of participants surfed their way through the 11th Annual WILDCOAST Dempsey Holder Ocean Festival and Surf Contest on the north side of the Imperial Beach Pier on Sunday, September 28th. With more than 1,000 spectators lining the pier and a packed beach, over 250 surfers shredded the 2-4 foot northwest wind swell in what has become one of the largest surf contests in California. The event, which honors legendary Imperial Beach surfer and lifeguard Dempsey Holder, celebrates the need to conserve our coast and ocean and safeguard our new system of Marine Protected Areas in San Diego County.

“We were blown away by how many people came out this year for the Dempsey from throughout San Diego County, Orange County, northern Baja California and of course Imperial Beach. More than one hundred kids participated in the event, many for the first time,” said WILDCOAST Executive Director Serge Dedina. “Thanks to the generous support from our sponsors, many kids received scholarships to surf in the event at no cost. The participation of so many surfers from Baja really illustrated how surfing and the ocean bring our communities together despite walls that divide us.”

San Diego standout Jay Christenson took first in the Open Men’s followed by IB surfers Kyle Knox and Mike Girdner. Jay is no stranger to the Dempsey and has made his way through, and winning, the Boys and Junior Men divisions over the years. Jason King put on an impressive display of power surfing followed by IB locals Daniel Dedina and Cameron Bartz in the Junior Men’s. Anne Freire de Carvalho took first in the Open Women’s final followed by Megan Scully and IB local, Peachy Aldredge. And in the Junior Women’s final it was Del Mar’s Daphne Manhalter who took top honors followed by Sydney Zoehrer and Deanna Duenes.

The Boys (12-14) division saw some of the hardest fought heats of the day with Tanner Ford and Lance Mann battling it out with Jack and Peter Stewart, Andrew Shade and Zach Hastings for top honors. Tanner won with an impressive display of forehand surfing followed by Mann and Shade.

The Menehune Division (11 and under) is always a favorite among the crowd and although small in stature, these boys and girls threw huge scores with stellar surfing performances. Joseph Williamson took the win in the Menehune Boys division, followed by Ben Reuf and Emiliano Mendez. In the Menehune Girls it was Hannah Dunphy followed by Illiana Lopez and Illusion Flowers. Hannah’s top heat score of the Menehune Divisions won her a fresh board shaped by local IB shaper Jay Novak. Novak’s boards, made custom for this event, also went to the first place finishers in the Junior Men, Junior Women and Boys divisions.

Other standouts of the day included Spencer Hays, whose smooth nose-riding won him first place in the longboard division, Jack Beresford, winner of the kneeboard division, and Jesse Sinclair, who edged out Ed Custodio in a high action Masters (40-49) Final.

“All in all it was a super successful event,” said contest director Zach Plopper of WILDCOAST. “The kids and adults were absolutely stoked to have ripable conditions and warm water and surf in a super grassroots and community event.”

Event sponsors included the County of San Diego, Port of San Diego, Nextivity Inc., Emerald City, Naked Viking Surf, Cunniff Construction, Pacific Realty, Katy’s Café, Pacifica Companies, Isle Surf Boards, Baja Bound, Surf Hut, Oakley, Pier South Resort, Sea 180, Joyln Clothing, Matuse, Dames Day Spa, Adept Process Services, Kind Bars, Surfer Journal, Filippi’s Pizza, K-Pasta, and Barrels.
