Surfing the Border

Serge Dedina will launch his new book, Surfing the Border: Adventures at the Edge of the Ocean, at the Pier South Resort in Imperial Beach on Saturday January 24 from 5-6:30 PM.

In his latest book, the longtime surfer, conservationist and Imperial Beach Mayor journeys into the world of surf culture and travels around the globe to highlight how surfing connects us to the scarce natural and cultural coastal niches that remain.  Co-founder and executive director of WILDCOAST, an international conservation organization, Dedina has dedicated his life to protecting the coastline of California and Mexico.

Dedina is an award-winning conservationist who learned to surf in the 1970s in Imperial Beach, California, where he shared waves with colorful characters such as The Hulk and The Electric Duck. A former ocean lifeguard, he has lived and surfed in Mexico, El Salvador, Morocco, England, Spain, Peru, Australia, and France.

These experiences, and his career as a coastal conservationist, form Dedina’s view of surfers as “outsiders on the edge of civilization who are able to experience life beyond borders.” For Dedina, his life of surf travel and living between borders has helped him to “find the original and unique among our increasingly crowded and homogenous world.”

Previous books by Dedina include Saving the Gray Whale and Wild Sea: Eco-Wars and Surf Stories from the Coast of the Californias
