Protecting California's Seamounts

Safeguard California's Underwater Treasures
Brian Skerry

The federal waters off the California coast are home to an exceptional array of seamounts, ridges, and banks that host diverse marine wildlife and habitat.

These special places support endangered fin and blue whales, endangered white abalone, unique anglerfish, rare deep‐water corals and sponges, and many other species. Some seamounts serve as fueling stations for migratory species like endangered sperm whales and sea turtles, seabirds and sharks. And they also provide outstanding recreational opportunities for fishing and deepwater diving.

Designating these treasures as protected areas will safeguard their ecological and cultural value. It would also preserve access for recreational fishing and other forms of recreation for now and the future.

WILDCOAST is part of a collaborative with Surfrider Foundation, Marine Conservation Institute and other groups that support the conservation and protection of California Seamounts. To learn more about these special places and to get involved, please visit
