It's Shark Week - Do your part to save them!

Did you know that every year more people die from dog attacks, mosquito bites, or electrocution by Christmas lights than by shark attacks?

Did you know that every year more people die from dog attacks, mosquito bites, or electrocution by Christmas lights than by shark attacks?

Sharks have been exploited by the media as "vicious killing machines," and casted as man’s ultimate ocean enemy…and thanks to all the negative publicity, no marine species is more misunderstood or threatened.

Why should I care about the commercialization of shark fishing and finning?

Sharks are essential to life in the ocean since they feed on sick, weak, or old animals; they regulate the health of marine ecosystems. If we destroy them in exchange for a short-term economic gain, we risk a loss of unimaginable proportions in the long run: the destruction of our oceans and hence, ourselves.

The Problem

  •  About 100 million sharks are brutally finned each year to fuel a global demand for shark fins and meat.
  • As a result, an estimated 30% of open ocean sharks are threatened with extinction. They are being fished beyond their rate of reproduction.

How can we help save the world’s sharks from extinction?

Please join WiLDCOAST and our partners at Ocean Conservancy in urging California's State Senate to give critical protection to sharks by passing Assembly Bill 376.

Please sign this petition to let California Senators know that a healthy ocean depends on healthy shark populations--and do your part to help make sure that sharks worldwide can survive.
