Irene Barajas WINS 2nd Prize in COX Conserves Heroes Award Program

$5,000 to be Donated to WiLDCOAST's Environmental Education and Habitat Restoration Efforts in the Otay Valley Regional Park
Irene Barajas accepts her $5,000 COX Conserves Heroes Award on-field at the San Diego Padres Game

A BIG Congratulations goes out to Irene Barajas of San Ysidro who won 2nd prize in the 2011 San Diego COX Conserves Heros Award Program. Irene is a dedicated WiLDCOAST super-volunteer and Girl Scout Troop Leader of 60 girls. Irene will be donating her prize winnings to WiLDCOAST where the funds will be utilized for environmental education and habitat restoration in the Otay Valley Regional Park (OVRP).

Irene has been a key volunteer during restoration of the OVRP, a local open space gem in south San Diego Bay. The OVRP is an under‐utilized park within the communities of Chula Vista, National City, San Ysidro and Imperial Beach. Irene and her 60 Girls Scout girls and parents have coordinated and facilitated over 65 conservation‐oriented volunteer projects to restore and rehabilitate this park through WiLDCOAST. The troop has weeded, planted, watered and cultivated a love for this park and the ecological restoration projects.

Irene and her Girl Scouts have conducted 8 cleanups in this region, hiked the OVRP 2 times, created 2 public service announcements, and hosted 3 picnics within the OVRP. They have planted hundreds of native plants in the park and returned to restoration sites every Friday for a year to ensure the survival of their native plant restoration work. Irene sees these projects as key to nurturing an environmental consciousness in these girls who lead very urban lives.

Congratulations to all of the 2011 San Diego COX Conserves Heroes finalists who are working hard for the conservation movement in San diego!
