WiLDCOAST celebrated "Underwater Parks Day" at the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla.

WiLDCOAST was at the Birch Aquarium to celebrate our new Marine Protected Areas.

Thousands of visitors showed up to the Birch Aquarium on Saturday January 21st to celebrate California’s new Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). WiLDCOAST was there to join in the celebration.

Adults and kids had a fun filled day that included funactivities to learn about San Diego’s new marine protected areas. Kids went tidepooling to learn about the different marine life that lives in the La Jolla reserve, and then decorated tote bags with drawings of their favorite marine animals. They also enjoyed WiLDCOAST’s informational booth where they showed their love for their new MPAs by taking a picture as a sea lion!  The aquarium offered a series of educational talks with local scientists about the importance of protecting these iconic marine ecosystems.

A big “thank you” to everyone that came to the event; we’re continually inspired to see so many bright kids that are interested in ocean conservation.  Our work to protect places like La Jolla, Tijuana River Mouth and Swamis is for future generations of all species, so they too may enjoy the richness of California’s marine ecosystems.

To learn more about the network of Marine Protected Areas in San Diego join us on Saturday February 4th for a free event at the Tijuana River Estuary in Imperial Beach.
