On Thursday February 23rd WiLDCOAST, the Tijuana Estuary and CA State Parks staff partnered to provide a service learning project for High Tech High Chula Vista students. The project included a presentation by WiLDCOAST staff that focused on border region issues and pollution. Students learned about the specific challenges that affect the Tijuana River Watershed due to its binational nature and the impacts of cross-border trash and wastewater. Later, they traveled to the Tijuana Estuary, where CA State Parks education specialists explained wetland functions, the importance of the biodiversity specific to the Tijuana Estuary and the differences between native and invasive plants. The project ended with the youth participating in an on-site invasive plant removal activity.

WiLDCOAST thanks Danielle Litke, Anne Marie Tipton, Marya Amhad, Lorena Loerner, Caroline Chen and Brook Gonazalez for facilitating project coordination.
