Sustinable Solid Waste Management Workshops in El Vizcaino region

Solid waste separation, reusing, recycling and domestic composting

In June, WiLDCOAST organized workshops to teach women of the Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve communities about solid waste separation, reuse, recycling and domestic composting. This project is being funded by the Fondo Mexicano para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (FMCN).

The effort was organized in response to women’s voices throughout the Vizcaino region. The women are eager to solve the problem of a lack of solid waste management. The workshops were held in La Bocana and Bahía Asunción, BajaCalifornia Sur. This region is very well conserved, even though it’s threatened by anever-increasing amount of solid waste (trash). Because of the lack of management, waste can be found everywhere carried by the strong coastal winds and eventually ends up at the beach and then theocean, causing deaths of birds, turtles, marine mammals and fish.

Adriana Figueroa, environmental activist and expert in sustainable solid waste management and compost fabrication conducted the workshops. The 6-day journey concluded with a conference amongst women of La Bocana, Bahía Asunción and Bahía de los Ángeles (of Bahia de los Angeles Biosphere Reserve). WiLDCOAST appreciates the support given by both  the Biosphere Reserve administrations of Celerino Montes and Jaime Morales from VBR and Isabel Fuentes from BABR.

Visual artist Xavier Fajardo, who is creating a documentary about the project, documented all of the activities. The video is being created to: Communicate the seriousness of the lack of solid waste management plans in these communities, as well as the threat it represents; train more individuals about trash separation, reuse, recycling and domestic composting; establish a learning community and network among women throughout the region.
