WiLDCOAST and Locals Prevent Ocean-Bound Trash from Impacting Local Beaches During the 4th Annual Tijuana En La Playa 2012

by Paloma Aguirre

It was a busy weekend for WiLDCOAST! the 4th annual Tijuana en la Playa/Surfing en el Border contest took place in Playas de Tijuana over the weeked. Over 16,000 attendees from both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border participated in the weekend-long event.

Acitivities for the event included a collective wedding event for couples, music concerts, a dog costume contest, a car show, a skate competition, the very anticipated "Surfing en el Border" surf and bodyboard competition and WiLDCOAST sponsored beach cleanup.

A number of locals joined WiLDCOAST in the Sunday effort to clean the beach. Geared with trash pickers and trash bags volunteers walked the length of the beach to collect trash that would have otherwise ended up in the ocean.

Many of the volunteers were eager to participate in more cleanup activities-" Summer is a busy time for us here in Playas and we need to make sure the beaches are clean" said Carlos a local volunteer. People should learn to not throw trash on the beach but until they do we need to make sure it doesn't wash out to sea" he said.
