WiLDCOAST and the Imperial Beach Health Center hosted an event on Saturday December 4th to reach out to the South Bay Pier fishing community. Fishing/health guides were distributed to more than 30 Imperial Beach Pier fishers. These guides were developed in partnership with the Imperial Beach Health Center through the Community Clinics Initiative, funded by the TIDES foundation and were part of a risk assesment study carried out by SDSU's graduate School of Public Health.

This study conducted risk assesment analyses of fish samples taken off the waters surrounding the Imperial Beach Pier. They were tested for chlorinated pesticides and heavy metals. Results indicated that fish caught off the Imperial Beach Pier were just as safe to eat as fish bought at the supermarket.

These results along with general hygiene and ocean water quality guidelines were included in the fishing/health guides distributed at Saturday's event.

WiLDCOAST would like to thank Katy's cafe and Star bakery for sponsoring the event.
