JOB DESCRIPTION

AGENCY: WiLDCOAST 

JOB TITLE: Coastal Conservation Program Coordinator

Report to: Coastal Conservation Program Manager 

Location: Imperial Beach, California

Position Summary: The Coastal Conservation Program Coordinator coordinates WiLDCOAST’s projects to protect and conserve coastal ecosystems in the San Diego-Tijuana border region, including south San Diego Bay and the Tijuana River Mouth Marine Protected Area. The program coordinator will work primarily to inform and engage local stakeholders in conservation actions.

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Organize and lead cleanups, restoration events, and tours in the Tijuana and Otay River watersheds with WiLDCOAST volunteers and partnering agencies/organizations.
  • Initiate and strengthen partnerships with schools, public agencies, businesses, and nonprofit partners.
  • Work collaboratively with WiLDCOAST staff and external partners to implement projects.
  • Develop and distribute educational and outreach materials.
  • Coordinate public outreach, education, and advocacy events.
  • Give presentations to community stakeholder groups and schools.
  • Organize events to educate local communities about cross-border sewage contamination.
  • Organize events to promote Otay Valley Regional Park usage.
  • Organize tours of the Tijuana River watershed and Otay River Watershed.
  • Assist program manager in social media updates and campaigns.
  • Train and supervise interns and volunteers.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor degree in natural resource management, ecology, biology or other related fields or commensurate experience.
  • Experience organizing events and giving presentations to diverse audiences.
  • Day, evening and weekend hours required.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Fieldwork up to 60% of the time.
  • Ability to endure physically demanding field conditions including but not limited to extreme weather conditions, walking long distances, and lifting equipment and supplies over 40 lbs.
  • Current passport or visa to cross U.S./Mexican border.
  • Outgoing, energetic and enthusiastic personality.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong public speaking skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to manage complex issues creatively and effectively.
  • Demonstrated good judgment, initiative, and ability to make independent decisions.
  • Working knowledge of the San Diego-Tijuana region preferred.
  • Familiarity with the region’s native wildlife, habitat, and non-native invasive species.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States. 

Desired Experience/Skills

 

  • Experience working with a variety of people from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • High level of competence using Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook.
  • Spanish fluency.
  • Public relations experience.
  • Basic understanding of non-profit organization business processes.
  • Experience working with international media, governmental agencies, and funding organizations.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, non-profit environment.
