UPDATE :Scorching Heat Didn't Stop Volunteers From Collecting 3,440 lbs of Trash on CCD!!

by Paloma Aguirre

Temperatures reached 109F on Saturday September 15 during Coastal Cleanup Day at Dairy Mart Road in the Tijuana River Valley, but that did not stop volunteers who turned out to clean ocean-bound trash from the Tijuana River. Organized by I Love a Clean San Diego and led by WiLDCOAST, the cleanup event hosted over 55 volunteers including members from the Girl Scout troop 5052, Navy service members, CA American Water, Southwest High School students and teachers, High Tech High faculty and loyal WiLDCOAST volunteers.

68 waste tires (about 1020 lbs of recycleables) and 3,440 lbs of trash (1.72 TONS) were removed from the Tijuana River bed in an effort to prevent them from flushing out to sea once the rain season begins.

WiLDCOAST would like to thank I Love a Clean San DiegoOcean Minded, Disney Pixar and specially all the volunteers who brave the intense heat!!

And a special thank you to our WiLDCOAST volunteers Kittie and John!!

Additionally, two more cleanup sites were held within the Tijuana River Valley: 98 volunteers who removed 846 lbs of trash and 5 lbs of recycling at Border Field State Park, and 185 volunteers who removed 255 lbs of trash and 45 lbs of recycling at the Tijuana Slough NWR.

Add in the total from the Dairy Mart cleanup with WiLDCOAST and that is 2.28 tons of trash!!!

Overall a very succesful start to Tijuana River Action Month 2012!!
