Another HUGE Success!! WiLDCOAST Thanks Surfrider San Diego, Tijuana Estuary, Urban Corps, and All of our Volunteers for last Saturday's Cleanup!

by Paloma Aguirre

On Saturday October 13, 2012 WiLDCOAST, Surfrider San Diego, the Tijuana Estuary, Ca State Parks, Urban Corps and over 150 volunteers joined forces to host the 3rd cleanup of Tijuana River Action Month at Border Field State Park in Goat Canyon an area highly impacted by trash and waste tires coming from across the border from a community known as Los Laureles. This underserved community is an area where many residents have inadequate access to trash collection services and waste water infrastructure.

For three hours volunteers including youth and students from La Jolla High school, Coronado Surf Club, Southwestern College along with all the Surfrider, Tijuana Estuary and WiLDCOAST volunteers helped remove over 3,000 lbs of trash and more than 130 waste tires from the creek bed prior to the rain season starting and washing it downstream potentially impacting the fragile ecosystem of the Tijuana Estuary, Tijuana River Marine Protected Area and Pacific Ocean Shoreline.

WiLDCOAST would like to thank REI, Urban Corps, Ocean Minded, 91X, SDGE, the City of San Diego and the County of San Diego for making this cleanup a success!
