Registration Now Open for the 2013 Walter Caloca Surf Open

The Walter Caloca Surf Open Returns to San Miguel on March 23 and 24

On March 23 and 24, 2013, The United Athletes of the Pacific Ocean (UAPO) and WiLDCOAST will hold the 3rd Annual Walter Caloca Surf Open at San Miguel, Ensenada, Baja California. This annual charity event is the largest surf event in Ensenada and one of the few binational events in the Californias. With youth competitors from the United States and Mexico, beach cleanups, spectators, music, prizes and other entertainment, this year’s event is expected to be a tremendous success. Proceeds from the event will support UAPO’s efforts to promote a binational surfing experience among youths on both sides of the US/Mexico border and support the newly established Bahia Todos Santos World Surfing Reserve, which includes San Miguel.

UAPO is partnering with WiLDCOAST again this year to create another successful event. Numerous San Diego County and Baja California surfers will join together for the first time at San Miguel for two days of competition and a celebration of our collective coastal region. The event will provide not only the first organized surfing competition experience for many under-served youths in San Diego County and Baja California, but also their first opportunity to engage with fellow surfers from across the border.

Last year’s event attracted participants and spectators from United States, Venezuela and Mexico. The two day contest showcased junior boy and girl surfers on Saturday and open division men and women on Sunday. A beach cleanup, supported by Ocean Minded, removed more than 120 pounds of debris from the San Miguel shoreline. Additional event supporters included Baja Bound Insurance, Adobe Guadalupe vineyards, Boule restaurant, Tecate, Pawa and the Municipality of Ensenada.

The Walter Caloca Surf Open is held in memory of Walter Caloca, a young local surfer who tragically passed away several years ago. In addition to a celebration of his life, the event celebrates San Miguel’s clean and accessible coastal environment.
