Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970, following a 1969 UNESCO conference in San Francisco, and is now an annual celebration in more than 190 countries.  This past weekend, as well as most of April, is a bustling time for environmental groups and people from all over San Diego to get involved in ways to help the earth, celebrate environmentalism and show our gratitude for this great earth we are lucky enough to enjoy.  WILDCOAST hosted a couple events and was thrilled to participate in some great activities:

·      UCSD Campus Wide Cleanup- We partnered with UCSD and Urban Corps once again, as well as San Diego Coastkeeper last Friday as part of UCSD’s Earth Week for a campus cleanup.  Students, professors and participants were able to remove over 50 lbs of mixed waste and over a thousand cigareette butts of cigarette butts before they washed into storm drains and eventually to the Scripps Area of Special Biological Significance and Matahuayl MPA just offshore the UCSD campus.

·      On Monday, we participated in the City of San Diego’s Earth Day Fair at the City Concourse Plaza in downtown, in between the city buildings.  WILDCOAST, along with the SD City Lifeguards, Think Blue and others, enjoyed the beautiful day informing hundreds of city employees and participants of how to safely enjoy and care for the earth.  Mayor Filner also spoke on the importance of the environment for the City of San Diego.

·      On Monday night we hosted a movie screening at Green Flash Brew Co. for their first movie event of the year.  We had over 60 participants who learned about WILDCOAST and our work around California and Mexico.  We watched the “Baja Wave Document” and “One River” while enjoying tasty beers from Green Flash Brew Co., and food from Devilicious food truck.

We hope you can join us and our awesome supporters for Earth Day activities in the future.  We have a busy next few months as every day is earth day here at WILDCOAST, please come and volunteer and show your support for protecting our coastal heritage and marine ecosystems.  Stay tuned for updates!
