Surfers lose bid to save popular Ensenada surfing spot

KPBS SAN DIEGO (2005-07-12) San Diego big wave surfers are mourning the destruction of a surfing spot know as Harry's near Ensenada Mexico. KPBS Reporter Erik Anderson has details.
Construction linked to a Sempra energy Liquefied Natural Gas terminal has apparently destroyed a big wave surfing spot along the Baja California coast. Wildcoast spokesman Serge DeDina says the energy company is building a jetty in the exact location where the waves break.
Dedina: The waves come out of deep water really close to shore and the waves just jack up. Its sort of like a Baja version of pipeline but it's a right hander. And for years it was a secret spot. Very few people knew about it.
Dedina says the location of Harry's was kept secret by a handful of big wave surfers. They worried the spot would become over-run if its location was made public. Dedina says surfers who've been fighting to protect the wave from development are devastated. Erik Anderson KPBS News.
