October 31. More than 200 surfers from throughout southern California
rallied at Trestles on Saturday to protest plans to build a private
highway that could ruin one of the state's premier surf breaks and most
heavily used state beaches.

"The proposed toll road that would cut through San Mateo Creek and San
Onofre State Beach would destroy one of southern California's last wild
areas and killer surf breaks," said Dovi Kacev of WiLDCOAST who attended
the rally organized by the Surfrider Foundation, Sierra Club and Friends of
the Foothills.
Led by women's professional surfing pioneer Jericho Poppler, and
legendary surfer Micky Munoz, more than 75 surfers paddled out at
Upper's holding "Stop the Toll Road" and chanting "Save Trestles."
Poppler who regurarly surfs Trestles with her three daughters said,
"We need to preserve Trestles as a national surfing preserve-forever."

In June, more than 25 activists traveled to Sacramento to lobby state
officials to halt the proposed highway. While at the Capitol, the
surfer group met with Governor Schwarznegger and presented him with a
"Save Trestles" surfboard signed by more than 2,000 Orange County
residents and California surfers.

While standing on the beach surveying the rippable and uncrowded 2-4'
peaks on a perfect fall day, Surfrider's Mark Rauscher declared that,
"We're going to stop the toll road that is going to wreck the place."
The fight to stop the toll road has been led by the Surfrider
Foundation, Sierra Club and Friends of the Foothills. The groups have
organized a meeting with the State Park's Commission on Thursday, Nov.
3 at 7 pm at the San Clemente Community Center Auditorium, 100 North
Calle Seville (Corner of Seville and Del Mar). For more info on these
