"El Tiburon" Dominates Earth Fair

San Diego, California. April 25, 2006. The lucha libre character El Tiburon ("The Shark") took over the 2006 San Diego Earth Fair in Balboa Park this Sunday. El Tiburon, a retired Mexican wrestler, helped spread WiLDCOAST's message to defend the sea and fight for clean water. He distributed postcards featuring Mexican soccer player Jorge Campos, and talked to kids about how they can help protect the ocean. Hundreds of children received coloring pages featuring El Tiburon and his message: "Defiende el Mar! Clean Water Now!"

Crowds gathered to watch El Tiburon fight El Malo ("The Bad One"), representing large-scale development companies, in a battle to save the sea and its wildlife. El Tiburon made his debut with the help of WiLDCOAST's Sea Turtle mascot, who accompanied El Tiburon in the Environmental Parade.

Thanks to the work of El Tiburon and our volunteers, the Earth Fair was a huge success. WiLDCOAST volunteers were able to reach thousands of fairgoers, educating them on the need for clean water and marine protected areas. Over 150 people signed our petition supporting WiLDCOAST's Comprehensive Clean Water Plan. This plan will put into place long-term solutions to the pollution responsible for closing our beaches in south San Diego.

WiLDCOAST extends a special thank you to our volunteers: Juan Manzo, Bettina Rausa, Liz Fellner, Marta Robles, Martha Marmolejo, Melissa Lim, Soudavan Kaiyarath and Dovi Kacev.
