Sustainable Seafood

News

The Problem

•The Sea of Cortez is one of the most productive marine ecosystems in the world. It is threatened by poor fisheries management and wasteful, destructive fishing practices.

•Seafood products from the Sea of Cortez are sold worldwide. There are some sustainable fishing practices and potential for more but not enough incentives yet in the Mexican and US markets despite geographical proximity.

•There is potential demand for sustainable seafood products in Mexico. However there is a lack of:

  • Awareness among the target population (middle and high income class).
  • Market incentives.
  • Information / awareness.

Influential Mexican chefs are demanding sustainable seafood choices, but availability is poor or non-existing due to lack of market incentives.

The Solution

Opportunities

• Influential Mexican chefs want sustainable seafood choices

• Potential demand among Mexican middle and upper class.

• Need to raise awareness among target markets in Mexico and the US.

• Need to provide market incentives to activate demand and supply chain.

WiLDCOAST is working to identify sustainable seafood sources (actual or potential) and key actors in the supply chain.

•Influential Mexican chef Patricia Quintana already WiLDCOAST’s spokesperson for sustainable fisheries; five more influential Mexican chefs on board

• WiLDCOAST proposes a series of events in Mexico City to attract influential people and media to put sustainable seafood on the radar.

•Leverage existing green wave in Mexico and worldwide for extensive media coverage

•Develop new generation of eco-celebrities in Mexico

•Need to identify providers and key actors to improve the supply chain.

•In kind sponsorship from DIAGEO / Buchanan’s, and the Packard Foundation
