Clean Water Now The Problem The Solution Take Action Sign Petition

Take action

You can make a difference! Our elected officials need to know how much you care about clean water. Here are three actions you can take right now to help reduce beach closures:

1. Sign our petition to support clean water now!!! This petition will be sent to our local, state and federal representatives in support of a comprehensive clean water plan to end cross-border pollution.

2. Participate in WiLDCOAST’s  Clean Water Now! activities, including rallies and beach cleanups, beach parties and concerts. You can learn more about these events by joining WiLDCOAST’s Clean Water Now! Mailing list.

3. Write, email and/or call your elected representatives. Here is a sample letter and a list of local, state and federal officials who are ultimately responsible for making sure our beaches are clean and healthy.

(DATE)

Dear (Councilmember, Senator, Congressman…etc),

As a beach user in south San Diego County I am greatly concerned by the increasing impact of cross-border sewage on our ocean water quality. While evidence shows overall beach water quality in San Diego County has improved over the last few years, our water quality in the southern part of the County has not. The San Diego Department of Environmental Health has found that in 2005, nearly 80% of the entire County’s beach closure days were caused by sewage-contaminated water from the Tijuana River and Mexico. A WiLDCOAST survey in 2007 found that 3 out of 5 regular ocean users in Imperial Beach reported illnesses related to physical exposure to ocean contamination.

The Tijuana River pollution not only affect the community's health, but as well as the environment and the economy along the San Diego-Tijuana border.

Please support the development of a comprehensive clean water plan that addresses the root source of cross-border sewage: Tijuana’s lack of sewage infrastructure. Stand up for the thousands of south San Diego County residents whose lives are affected by sewage-contaminated water from Mexico and help us solve this growing problem.

Sincerely,
