WiLDCOAST VICTORY!!! Shark slaughter stops PDF Print E-mail

PLAYA TRONCONES, GUERRERO, May 6, 2008- Thanks to the work of WiLDCOAST and the strong support of worldwide public opinion we were able to stop the slaughter of sharks in Playa Troncones in the Mexican coast of Guerrero, and achieved a public commitment to stop threats to this species protected by Mexican and international laws.

"This “ad hoc” campaign was a good example of how quickly organizations and society must act to respond to this kind of events in order to avoid damage to our oceans and marine species.

"Species such as sharks are essential for the ocean’s ecological balance”, said Aida Navarro, Wildlife Conservation Manager at WiLDCOAST, who added that after seeing society’s rejection to the killing of sharks, will double efforts to raise awareness in this region with their "Save Sharks" campaign.

On May 1st, Zihuatanejo’s port authorities killed at least eleven sharks (including young sharks) and exposed them as hunting trophies in an attempt to avoid “bad tourist image” after Adrian Ruiz, an American tourist died as a result of a shark attack and the lack of medical attention last April the 28th in Playa Troncones.

Government entities such as Guerrero’s ministry of the environment (SEMAREN) claim that fishermen have committed to avoid the irrational killing of sharks.

It is worth mentioning that several environmental organizations such as SOS Bahía de Zihuatanejo, Asociación de Protección a los Animales Helene Krebs, Red de Organizaciones y Grupos Ambientalistas de Zihuatanejo, Organización México Unido por sus Playas, Defenders of Wildlife, researchers, among others joined the protest and defense of sharks and ocean ecosystems.

This is an acknowledgement to civil society for publicly showing their opposition and indignation for the irrational killing of sharks in the media, some of which showed a true commitment to defending the environment.

WiLDCOAST /COSTASALVAjE recognizes that this deplorable hunt leaves a moral to this coastal community and the public opinion, which we hope to leverage and transform into an opportunity to value and protect our marine wildlife.
